Selling Your Home on Long Island

Should I sell in winter or wait until spring?

Written and reviewed by Andrew Ragusa, Licensed Real Estate Broker and Broker of Record, REMI Realty LLC — 11+ years of transactions across Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens.

The short answer

Spring is generally the busiest season for home sales and winter is generally the slowest, although the pattern depends on the local market. On Long Island and in Queens and Brooklyn, the market can stay active year-round, and there are still buyers looking during the colder months.

More important than the calendar is whether the sale fits your life and your goals. Selling means showings, keeping the house clean and ready, working around family schedules, and then packing, moving and lining up your next home. Your own motivation matters too. If waiting until spring would make all of that harder, the season by itself is not a good reason to wait.

I would consider the market, but I would not let the calendar make the decision on its own. I go through the bigger timing question here: How do I know when it's the right time to sell?
