Legal Process & Closing in New York

Do I need a new survey when selling my house?

Written and reviewed by Andrew Ragusa, Licensed Real Estate Broker and Broker of Record, REMI Realty LLC — 11+ years of transactions across Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens.

The short answer

Generally, you do not need to order a new survey just to list your house. If you already have a survey, share it with your real estate attorney. If the buyer’s lender and title company accept it, it may save the buyer the cost of a new one.

An existing survey is not always enough, though. If it is old, or if the property has changed since it was drawn, an updated or new survey may be needed. Your attorney and the buyer’s title company will confirm what that particular transaction requires. I explain where this fits in the Seller’s Playbook.
