Legal Process & Closing in New York

How long does closing take in New York?

Written and reviewed by Andrew Ragusa, Licensed Real Estate Broker and Broker of Record, REMI Realty LLC — 11+ years of transactions across Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens.

The short answer

If you mean the closing appointment itself, a typical closing in New York takes about one to one-and-a-half hours. I usually tell clients to plan for one to two hours so there is enough time to review and sign the final documents, confirm funds and payoffs, and complete the transaction without feeling rushed.

That is separate from the overall timeline between signing the contract and reaching closing, which depends on factors such as financing, title work, the attorneys and the terms of the transaction. After the closing appointment, the deed and other recordable documents are submitted to the appropriate county clerk for recording.
