What is the difference between a real estate broker and a real estate agent?

In New York State, “real estate agent” is a broad term that covers both license types. There are two main licenses: real estate salesperson — the entry-level license — and real estate broker, which is the advanced license. To earn a broker’s license, most applicants need significantly more education, must pass the state exam and must document qualifying experience through New York’s points system. Completed sales earn substantial points, and other real estate activities count too. It is a higher licensing standard built on practical experience as well as education.
